As part of our commitment to helping you, we’ve put together this article to help you understand Physiotherapy at a deeper level, so you can feel confident about seeking it out as a treatment.

A Brief History of Physiotherapy

The earliest documented origins of Physiotherapy as a professional group dates way back to Per Henrik Ling, the “father of Swedish Gymnastics”, who founded the Royal Central Institute of Gymnastics for Massage, Manipulation and Exercise in 1813. Sweden’s National Board of Health and Welfare recognised its potential, and Physiotherapists were given official registration in 1887. Over the decades that follow, Physiotherapy has surged ahead to become the popular health care profession we all know and love today.

What is Physiotherapy?

Put simply, Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that involves diagnosis and treatment of people who experience difficulty moving or performing normal activities due to a condition or illness. However, what makes it truly unique is that people are often restored back to health through Physiotherapy without the use of drugs or surgery. Internationally, Physiotherapy is sometimes known as ‘Physical Therapy’ and Physiotherapists as ‘Physical Therapists’.

Physiotherapy and How YOU Benefit

Our Physiotherapists in central Melbourne know that the most important person in physiotherapy treatment is YOU. Your physiotherapist, ‘in a nutshell’, is dedicated to:

  • Promoting injury prevention and overall health and well-being
  • Ultimately, your physiotherapist is about improving your quality of life.
